Costume
The Greenwood Quire is generally non-costumed.
However, in the spirit of Thomas Hardy’s quire in Under the Greenwood Tree, we do wear white shirts for performance, and a number of our members add further to the atmosphere by wearing full costume.
The musicians wore coloured handkerchiefs wound round and round the neck over which they just showed their ears and noses, like people looking over a wall. The remainder, stalwart, ruddy men and boys were dressed mainly in snow-white smockfrocks embroidered upon the shoulder and breast in ornamental forms of hearts, diamonds and zig-zags.
